Here I am in 2013, looking back at about 25 years now since I came to realize that the tunes I was hearing back then on the radio and the streets is called “house music”. How the world has changed since.
Today house music is alive and well, no matter what it is called. Electronic dance music, or EDM, continues to evolve. “Underground Dance Music” would probably make a more accurate new moniker for house music, but there are enough genres out there that we don’t need any new names.
I decided to put together this blog as a means of expressing my views about how house music has been shaped and developed by outside forces. I am not in the music industry, I never did any more than tinker in some amateur DJ-ing. But my story is interesting nonetheless.
I have numerous hours of music that I have compiled from NYC radio shows from the time when Hot 97 was a dance music station. I have been to many clubs and have spoken to many DJ’s over the years. I continue to be a devoted fan of the music. I want to share my experience with the rest of the world.
The mid-late 80’s was an amazing and unique period in music history. Often times we look back at the past with nostalgic memories, yearning for the good old days. I really don’t think that’s happening with regards to this particular flashback into time. It really was a period of change with an explosion of musical expression unlike anything since.
